Hummel Music

Treatise on piano-playing
Author: Johann Nepomuk Hummel (German, 1778-1837)
Publisher: Tobias Haslinger, Vienna
Date: 1828

First edition of J.N. Hummel's Ausfeuhrliche theoretisch-practische Anweisung zum Piano-forte-spiel. Volume is 444 pages, large 4to, engraved throughout; portrait of the author (by F. Sroeber after Ehergott Gruenier); Elaborate dedication title-page, privilege ornamented with coat of arms; engraved titles to each part, preliminaries and music. Bound in green modern half morocco, gilt spine.
Hummel's piano treatise is "one of the most important sources of information about the late Viennese style of performing and, in particular, ornamentation" (The New Grove Dictionary, 1980, Vol. 8, p. 784).
This is of particular interest because Hummel was a pupil of Mozart, whose ornamentation of his own piano music is the subject of much interest. He became one of the leading pianist-composers of the early 19th century: Mozart was so impressed by Hummel that he taught him free of charge. He was regarded by his contemporaries as Europe's leading pianist, his style leaving a strong influence on Chopin.
