Beethoven Score

Messa a quattro Voci (First Edition)
Composer: Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
Date: 1812

Messa a quattro Voci coll'accompagnamento dell'Orchestra composta da Luigi van Beethoven. Drey Hymnen f r vier Singstimmen mit Begleitung des Orchesters, in Musik gesetzt und Sr Durchlaucht dem Herm. Frsten von Kinsky zugeeignet von Ludw. v. Beethoven. 86s Werk. Partitur. Leipzig, Breitkopf and Hortel. (1812).
First Edition. 107 pp. Engraved oblong folio, p.n. 1667. Green quarter vellum, paper boards.
There are two states of the first edition: one with "Anmerkung" printed on the verso of the final page, and the other with it printed on the verso of the title page. We believe that this is the first state, with "Anmerkung" at the end. Kinsky gives priority to the second state, but does not explain his reasoning.
Both issues are otherwise identical, and both have a printed note at the foot of page 71 stating, "siehe die Anmerkung am Ende." This is an obvious indication that the publishers had decided to have the "Anmerkung" on the final page.
Richard Macnutt in his Catalogue 110, item 8, says "We regard [this issue] the 'ideal' (bibliographically) state of the work and also, in all probability, the earliest." Kinsky, pp. 239-40; Katalog Sammlung van Hoboken Bd. 2, No. 374.

Dimensions: 35.5x26.2cm
Condition: Sporadic foxing. Otherwise a nice copy.
