Etienne Marcel was a historical drama based on the hero of a popular rebellion
in 1358 during the regency of the Dauphin Charles. It had a contemporary
resonance, as "Marcel was in vogue in the 1870s as, during the rebuilding of the
capital after the ravages of the Commune, he was widely regarded as a forefather
of Parisian municipal life." Stephen Studd, Saint-Saens: A critical biography,
p. 116.
