This instument also known as taus enjoyed popularity for a brief period, and now is eclipsed by it's more popular cousin the dilruba, as well as the esraj.

As you can clearly see in this photo, the taus shares the use of skin on the resonator, the extra band of skin across the middle allows for more support as very thin skin is needed to get a good sound.

My favorite thing about this taus is the pegs, which remind me of old wind toys and roller skate keys. Although funny in appearance they are very easy to grab hold of.

The one thing that distinguishes from dilruba is the often elaborately carved bird at the end. Although very attractive, it does not change the tone all that much.
