Inventor of the saxophone, Adolphe Sax

Why is today a day that all saxophonist should be thankful for? It’s the birthday of Adolphe Sax, the inventor and developer of the saxophone in the early 1840’s.

Unlike other musical instruments that evolved over centuries, the saxophone was developed for a purpose. Adolphe wanted a reed instrument that could compete with the volume of brass instruments like the trumpet, and eventually developed the sax. It was used in and helped diversify the sound of military bands.

The instrument has continued to develop and improve through the research efforts of major musical instrument manufacturers. We can say with confidence that Adolphe Sax would be extremely happy with the way his creation has improved and developed over the past century.
