Ukuleles Galore!

Just last week we received a huge shipment of brand new ukuleles. Full of bright colors and unique designs, we were so excited to put these on display. To create an entire wall of ukuleles, we had to shift around our whole guitar room. Once we had the space, we whipped out our Gear Buddy® clip-on tuners and started tuning away! After they were all tuned (and then tuned again), we were able to hang them up and really see how awesome all these ukes are.

Each new ukulele comes with its very own bag, and prices start at only $41. These small instruments are great for children of any size, but the fun doesn’t stop there. People of all ages enjoy these Hawaiian instruments. Ukuleles have nylon strings, which are easy on your fingers, and they only have four strings, so learning chords and songs is always simple.

Ukuleles are the perfect gift for a family member or friend, and they’re the perfect instrument to give to yourself.

You can check out some of our ukuleles on our website here!

35th Anniversary Celebration

By the grace of God, we begin celebrating our 35th Anniversary this month. We are grateful and indebted to our friends and customers who have allowed us to be of service all these years.

In the coming weeks, we will have special anniversary promotions and sweepstakes, and wrap it up with clinics from Yamaha and Ibanez this spring. We will also post articles and pictures from the 1970’s to the present, and hopefully you will find them interesting and entertaining. Remember the Ibanez brass guitar, and the Alvarez double-neck acoustic? No? We’ll tell you all about it.

What major music events or trends happened in the 1970s? Aside from gasoline increasing from .25 cents to .50 cents a gallon (horrors!), we had some interesting music happenings.

* electronic music rose in popularity with development of the synthesizer
* disco was very popular in the late 1970s – remember “Saturday Night Fever”?
* reggae and punk rock grew significantly in the latter part of the decade
* locally, Mobile’s own Jimmy Buffet had the biggest hit of his career, “Margaritaville”; are you a Parrothead?

From bebop to hip hop, and punk to funk, we’ve seen (and heard) it all, and God willing, we’ll be around another thirty-five years. Happy Easter!

New Yamaha A Series Acoustic Guitars

Yamaha AC1M

Yamaha AC1M Acoustic Electric

We recently received a partial shipment of the new Yamaha A Series acoustic electric guitars, and our first impressions are very good.

The A-Series acoustic electric guitars are different from Yamaha’s popular FG and L Series handcrafted guitars. They were designed from the ground up here in the U.S. by Yamaha’s R & D team and have a new look, feel and sound. They spent three years on the A Series project, and spoke to countless guitarist and luthiers during the process.

If you like an acoustic guitar with very playable action, you’re going to love these instruments. They fret as easily as an electric guitar – no string buzz – and are very comfortable to hold and play.

We think the new Yamaha A Series acoustic electric guitars are going to be another home run for Yamaha.

BILLY’S BACK!

Billy McLaughlin

Billy McLaughlin in concert at Andy's Music, Mobile, AL.

It’s been well over a decade since Billy McLaughlin performed at Andy’s Music. It was back in the late 1990’s, and he packed the house. It was an SRO concert with fans coming from all over the central Gulf Coast.

Billy was a right-handed player then. Today he’s a lefty.

For twenty years, he amazed audiences around the world with his complex and rhythmic music. In 2001, Billy was diagnosed with Focal Dystonia, an incurable neuromuscular disease that rendered him unable to play his own music. By 2002, Billy McLaughlin’s career was over. He lost everything; his career, endorsements, home, and marriage – everything!

In 2006, Billy began a comeback and is doing the unthinkable – relearning his songs left handed. He has resumed an international schedule of concert appearances and speaking engagements. His remarkable comeback is captured in the documentary film Changing Keys (airing on PBS 2010) and a concert film called Coming Back Alive featuring McLaughlin with string orchestra and a reunion of his longtime rock band.

Billy McLaughlin is astounding audiences once again with both his story and his music, and resides in his home state of Minnesota where he is proudly raising two boys.

Welcome back Billy!
