The Rovner 1R Dark clarinet ligature is a fabric-and-metal ligature for Bb clarinet that produces a warm, centered sound, which is why it has been a staple in classical studios and school band rooms since Rovner introduced it in 1974.
Instead of a metal band clamping the reed, the 1R wraps it in a flexible synthetic fabric that holds it with even pressure and lets it vibrate freely. The result is a rounder, less edgy tone with a solid core, and it is the reason the "Dark" model is the one most classical players reach for.
Band directors and private teachers have recommended it for decades because it seats squarely on the mouthpiece, is hard to damage, and forgives a student embouchure that is still settling in. Advancing and professional players keep using it for the same reasons.
