The Yamaha Arius YDP-144 digital piano is the replacement for the previous model, YDP-143. Upgrades in the YDP-144 from the YDP143 include 192 notes of polyphony (vs. 128), Stereophonic Optimizer, and the Smart Pianist App.
The Smart Pianist App not only gives you full control over your piano's major functions using your smart device but also analyzes your favorite songs right out of your music library using chord tracker technology. It allows you to use functions like selecting Voices, controlling the metronome, or displaying the score on your smart device. It is available as a free download from Yamaha and requires the UD-WL01 USB Wireless LAN adaptor when using WI-FI.
The Stereophonic Optimizer is unique to Yamaha and adjusts the spacing of the sound and the separation from the piano when using headphones. The resulting spacious, and surround sound quality will inspire you to play for hours on end. The sound of the piano seems to come from the body of the instrument rather than from the headphones, providing a more realistic and natural experience.
There are at least two very important features a digital piano must-have for an experienced piano teacher to recommend to their students: 1) true piano touch, and 2) authentic piano tone. The YDP-144 meets these teacher recommendations easily.
Authentic Piano Tone
Yamaha’s Pure CF Sound Engine faithfully reproduces the tone of the Yamaha 9' CFIIIS concert grand piano, producing a very dynamic and expressive sound. This technology is the result of years of piano-making history and expertise in state-of-the-art sampling technology.
In addition, Damper Resonance DSPrecorded in the sample provides a deep resonance when the pedal is used, resulting in a more realistic sound, similar to that of an acoustic piano. Similarly, using the half-damper pedal control feature creates more subtlety when playing, and allows for continuously increasing lengths of sustained notes, from slight to full, as the sustain pedal is depressed. Just like a grand piano.
True Piano Touch
The YDP144 has Yamaha’s Graded Hammer Standard (GHS) keyboard action, which provides a heavier touch in the low end and lighter touch in the high end, similar to the hammers in an acoustic piano. For students, practicing with the GHS action builds proper finger technique and helps build hand and finger strength. An additional benefit, the matte finish on the black keys, makes them less slippery when playing for extended periods of time.
Other important features include: 2-track song recorder, a dual-mode for playing two voices together, Intelligent Acoustic Control (IAC) automatically ensures the richest tone at any volume level, and the USB TO HOST port for connecting to a computer or mobile device.
